Crafting outside the lines

Hood 1

A year ago I was unemployed and had carted some crafting supplies from pillar to post around the world. I told myself that I had time and would make something out of some awesome heathered pink pure wool that I had lots of because I can’t calculate how much I need for projects and had purchased roughly double what I needed for a project from a decade earlier. I could have returned it, but no, I don’t take back craft supplies. They are precious to me, even if I have no actual use for them now. They represent potential creativity.

So there I was with a Canadian winter coming on strong and I had been living in warm countries, so no longer owned a stash of winter hats, mitts, or scarves. I decided to take a crack at making a hood and scarf combo. I had this idea that I could wear the hood and wrap the scarf around and it would be awesome and warm.

First I cast on a bunch of stitches to make a shape that would go around the back of my head from one cheek to the other. I knit straight garter stitch (which is just knit every row) to keep things simple. I kept going until the piece was roughly as tall as my shoulder to to the top of my head.

Then I separated the stitches into three sections, with a narrow section in the middle that would make up the crown of the hood. I then knit just the middle bit. At the end of each row, I knit two together, picking up the last stitch of my section and the next one along the row of stitches on the sides.
