I’m Canadian and grew up in Ottawa. At that time (1970s and 80s) Ottawa was a pretty bland white middle class town. Many people would say it hasn’t changed much since then. It’s reputation is still basically bland and middle class, but it is much more multi-cultural than it was then. It was a big deal in the 80s that we had a massive wave of immigrants from Lebanon. Sorry it was because they were at war, but suddenly pita bread and hummus and stuffed grape leaves and baklava were all the rage with middle class families in Ottawa like mine.
